Working in Altona
Altona runs along the bay from the Altona Beach through to the older streets off Pier Street and the newer estates further inland. The sandy soil drains fast and holds few nutrients, so lawns here are often couch or kikuyu that go dormant quickly if they are cut too low in summer. We raise the mowing height through the warm months so the grass holds what moisture it can. The older homes near the foreshore have smaller front lawns and established hedges, usually pittosporum or westringia, that cop salt wind and grow sideways as much as up. Further inland toward the Altona Meadows border the blocks are bigger and newer, with buffalo lawns that want a regular cut and a feed in spring. Bayside salt also means gutters fill faster with fine debris, so gutter clears are common work here.
